@monorail I remember a post like "Sometimes on facebook you see someone you're friends with posting something in response to an absolutely wild take and wonder what kind of disconnect there is between your social circles"

This is that

@socks someone made some post about how just copypasting commands you don't understand won't teach you anything, as if just copypasting commands is mandatory for using arch

@the_gayest_doggo @socks i mean if you're literally just copying them from a step by step guide and making no attempt at all to understand what the command does or why you needed it then, then i get it

but

@monorail @socks but even then

How else am I supposed to learn systemd/apache2/mysql etc

We've long past outscaled the Linux ecosystem we had when you could just pop a lol bit of code in and recompile your whatever to make it work well or when you could just read all the man pages on day 1.

@monorail
@socks

If you arch and only copy paste commands you will still learn, because the docs between the commands tell you what bits need to be altered.

Copypasta will break the machine about 3/5 times, at which point you are forced to re read anyway, while also putting on your problem solving hat.

I know this, because I am this.

@monorail because of arch I could probably do Linux from Scratch

whether this is a compliment to arch is up to you

@monorail I just saw that too and I actually learned a bunch about stuff I probably would have never needed to touch on Ubuntu, maybe I will never need to touch them but I still learned something, and if any of those things do go wrong I will have an idea where to start

@monorail Arch is the endgame. It's what you install when you learn everything.

@harakiru I didn't start learning anything until I tried arch but that's not the common case, I wouldn't recommend it to new linux users blindly
