Something about E3 seems to awaken the old geezer within me. I start seeing all the fancy new games with their newfangled graphics and thinking about the good ol days when we had to walk to school, uphill, with random encounters.

Jokes aside, there is something that feels kinda... exorbitant about the level of detail put into so many modern games' graphics. It's really impressive, don't get me wrong, but it's just so much effort for something that often doesn't end up adding much to the experience imo. You have to look at it on a case-by-case basis, but it feels like there's very much still an arms race to make everything as photorealistic as possible at all costs.
