Introduction, important accommodation to consider

I have thalassophobia, which is an intense fear of deep water. The exact things that trigger this vary wildly from person to person, and can even be extremely specific within a single person, but my own case is pretty severe.

This can even include simply images or games with deep water in them. There's a lot of games that I love but haven't been able to beat, or only beat once with a lot of struggle or help, because they had particularly anxiety-inducing water sections. There's a lot of games that I'm interested in but can't play at all because water is too central to the gameplay.

I don't expect everyone to be aware of this or remember it, but if we're mutuals, then I'd very much appreciate a CW on anything that you might expect to be triggering in this regard. Like I said, the exact things that trigger it vary a lot and come in different degrees, even for a single person, but here's some good rules of thumb for myself:

- if the camera is above water and far from the surface, then it's usually fine
- if the camera is below water and it's significantly deeper and wider than a normal swimming pool, then it's usually bad
- if it involves creepy-looking aquatic creatures, then it's usually bad

Introduction

Hey everyone, I'm Beret! I've been on Elekk.xyz for the past year and a half or so but decided to come here at the recommendation of a friend. This place seems nice and cozy!

I'm into the basic nerdy stuff: vidjagames and anime and stuff. And according to legend, I'm also into creative stuff like gamedev, drawing, and writing, but uh, we'll see if I actually end up doing anything with those.

I try to be positive, and I talk mostly about games I like, with occasional discussion of more serious stuff. So, I guess that's the gist of it! It's cool to see you all!

The sequel to Nier Automata... Far Manualata

I'm simultaneously frustrated and amused at the fact that sites always try to distinguish between liking a review and finding it helpful, but then everyone just marks the funny reviews as helpful because that makes it even funnier, so it ends up being pointless.

covid, pol

Of all the reasons people give to not get vaccinated, I think one of the weirdest ones I've seen is the idea that it's some sort of effort to track people. Not that you shouldn't be worried about the government tracking you, but like... they're already doing that. If you own basically any modern technology, chances are you're being tracked to some extent in some way. They don't need vaccines to do that; they just need cell phones.

Sometimes I wonder what YTPs would even look like today if the Mario and Zelda CD-i games never existed. It's weird to think that a handful of bad spinoffs would end up indirectly having such a huge effect on this random internet subculture

It is my expert appraisal that Gardevoir is good

generally talking about phobias

It's sort of like weight lifting to become stronger. It's true that you need to push yourself and exercise to get stronger, but you also need to ease yourself into it and know what you're doing.

Weight lifting too much or without proper form will only *injure* you, which just makes it even harder to exercise in the future. So saying “you need to face your fears, so go to this place dedicated to triggering your phobia as much as possible” is like the mental equivalent of saying “you need to exercise, so go bench 300 pounds with no training and no spotter”.

generally talking about phobias

Still mad about the fact that almost every phobia-related subreddit I've ever come across has specifically revolved around sharing whatever pictures would be most triggering for people with that phobia. As opposed to, y'know, actually offering resources or support or discussion.

It's true that in order to overcome a fear, you need to expose yourself to it to varying extents, but people tend to have an extremely oversimplified view of how that works. It's not as simple as “I've seen a bunch of stuff I'm afraid of so now I'm less afraid of it”. When handled irresponsibly, that mindset can easily backfire and make the fear even worse.

The amount of time that's passed between the release of the original Skyward Sword and Skyward Sword HD is almost the same amount of time between the original Wind Waker and Wind Waker HD. That doesn't feel like it should be true for some reason, but it is.
